Meaning of "Mordi"

MORDI is a common name in the Ibo speaking north of Delta state of Nigeria. It was originally pronounced as MMORDI - meaning that the physical and spiritual world are organized, and managed by spirits. This is obvious since the Ibos are a very religious people who possess a lot of deities that they worship. Over time, the initial 'M' in MMORDI was dropped off and the name became simply MORDI. That it was the name of one of the ancestors of the Igala speaking families of Uchebe, Ebu, also in Delta State could be attributed to the influence of the Ibos over the Igalas of the early times. As settlers who came by river Niger from the north, the Igalas did not shy away from their host communities who included Ibo speaking people of Ezi, Obomkpa, Ubulubu, Illah, Onicha Olona, Akwukwu Igbo and a host of others. The interactions were total resulting in the movement of a lot of daughters from the surrounding communities into Ebu through marriage, and quite a handful of the Igala women were also married into the Ibo communities. The result of this inter-marriages and other social interactions was the adoption of Ibo names among the Igalas. For example, some of the children and grandchilren of Mordi had Ibo names like, Odu, Egbeni, Baadi, Agochi, Ayadiunor, Ebordi, Mohaenye, Amolo, and a lot more.
