It has been suggested that "Willott" is a diminutive form of "Will" just as "Charlot" is a diminutive or familiar form of "Charles." According to Ormerod's History of Cheshire, the name Willott (then spelled Wylot" appears in several legal records from the 14th and subsequent centuries. Willott Hall (near Adlington) appears to have been occupied by William Willott in the reign of King Edward III, and by Griffin Willott in the reign of Henry VIII.
