It lies along the Rur, on the German border between Roermond and Heinberg. Vlodrop consists of the village, the hamlet Vlodrop Station, the hamlet Etsberg (with the Gits Tapper water mill), and also with the outer part of the National Park "Meineweg" and the former Franciscan monastery of St. Louis. The name comes from Vlodrop Flodorp by metathesis [permutation of sounds) of the tribe village.
