I received verbal information about this many years ago: In our area (Neuwied) I also found the modifications "Kaltbeitzer" or "Kaltbeitzel" on gravestones. Allegedly, before they went into battle, the Teutons should have produced a red dye (stain) with which the warriors dyed their hair. When I asked where the informant got his knowledge from, he told me he was involved in SS genealogy. He has long since passed away. I cannot judge how credible this genealogy research was. Perhaps, in the time of National Socialism, too much was diligently traced back to the old Teutons ???
