I grew up in Dortmund, Germany. My name is Peter Hengstenberg. At 16, I came to live in the USA. As a student at die Mittelschule fuer Jungen in Dortmund, I choose to research our family history as the topic for my senior Jahresarbeit (termpaper). Here is how the name Hengstenberg came about. As you know, during early history, people were known by just their first names. As populations increased, there we not enough names to go around, so a last name was added, often related to a person's occupation (Baker, Smith) or their appearance (Longfellow, Tallman) or other charachteristics such as Doolittle. My ancestors bred horses for medieval warfare in the Sauerland (a minor mountain range in north-western Germany) not unlike the Catskills of New York State where I live now. One German word for horse is "Hengst" (stallion) and the word for mountain is "Berg". So my ancestors who raised stallions in the mountains became known as Von Hengstinberge. The spelling has undergone a number of changes over the years. I have a reproduction of our coat-of-arms, which shows a stallion reared to jump over a mountain.
