My understanding is that Fidoe is a derivation of Fitz Dieu or "son of God." Unfortunately this is probably a son born on the wrong side of the blanket, so to speak, to vicar or man of God. I think I am right in saying that most Fitzs were born out of wedlock, but somebody can surely elaborate on this.
