Most scholars believe the Latin "puteus" (wells) for the origin. Then they called with Dupuis those who owned his house in a well, or whose home was near a fountain. In France, one counts more than 30,000 Dupuis, who are particularly located in the north. The notation "Dupuit" and "Dupuits" comes from the same origin. The divergence in the letter you Puis, which sometimes occurs in the records indicates no reason to believe in a noble origin. All ancestors were craftsmen.
