Chelsey Nieman is a postdoctoral researcher working with Cary scientist Chris Solomon.She grew up in Alaska, where fishing was a large part of her life and her gateway into science. As an undergrad she began studying veterinary science before realizing that fish ecology was her true passion.

Doctoral candidate Chelsey Nieman created a phone app for the captains that allowed them to submit photos of water conditions and any walleye they caught on charter trips directly to the researchers. With 19 captains submitting photos during the and fishing seasons, the team has received about 200 photos so far.

PhD student Chelsey Nieman already completed a pilot study for the project at Stone Lab, working out details like setting up tanks for various experiments and taking care of the fish used in the study. Her two months at the lab were funded by Ohio Sea Grant’s Small Grants Program, which provides up to $10,000 in research support to applicants.
