The name Cheevers is believed to have originated with Roger Capra, c. 1000 (Latin; goat or possibly she goat). One of his sons, William Capra moved to England in 1066 and his name morphed to Chivere (French; goat) [see Domesday Book), eventually leading on to the many variations (about 20?) of Cheevers. Such speculation was, as far as I know, first made by the late Thomas Cheevers of Brantford, Ontario, Canada who started a genealogy of the Cheevers family Pre WWII, (He joined the Canadian Navy hoping to get to England and perhaps get some leave to Ireland but the Gods of war had other ideas and he spent the entire war guarding Halifax harbour His work, done in pre-computer days was quite extensive and detailed). In the years around 1000 surnames were just coming into common useage and frequently were tied to a location, occupation or personal characteristic. Another of Roger's sons was Pommeroy. Capra could have been a chacteristic of the animal - agility (my preferred choice) , eating habits or smell (not my preferred choice).
