Meaning of "Callwood"

Callwood is and was often written Calwood. Calwood came from Cawood around 1650, because text had been written earlier in "secretary hand" a form of writing with exagerated loops. In copying this text, the w was misinterpreted as lw. You can find many examples in the internet, for example, look for "cawood castle" and "callwood castle". The callwoods that we find on internet before 1650 were really cawoods, written with the exagerated w which was misinterpreted later. In the same family, that of my ancestor Robert Callwood of Disley, they used Callwood, Calwood, Cawood and even Cawwood. You can find many examples of Callwoods and Cawoods living in the same place; they were the same people. Even John Cawood the famous Royal Printer figures in a census as John Callwood. So Callwood has no meaning, except that it derives from Cawood, Ca is old English for birds of the crow family. Our family went from Cawood in Yorkshire 1200 to Mansfield maybe 1600, Derbyshire 1650 (see Callwood farm) Cheshire 1670, Lancashire perhaps 1720, back to Cheshire around 1800. Some of those Lancashire lads reached Liverpool and embarked to the BVI. Nothing to do with the Calderwoods, except that both names were sometimes miswritten as Caldwood. Neil Callwood
