Atwal is derived from "ooth walle" meaning camel farmers or traders. From the days of "Mahabharat" a certain person named Maharaj was the originator of a clan that started farming camels in northern India. These people lived mostly to the south of river Satluj and about a tousand years ago took up agricultural farming too. Some of them migrated to across the satluj to (nowadays called) district Jalandhar,as well as to Hoshiarpur, Ambala, Patiala, Ludhiana districts and to the west Panjab too. Their clan name was firmly established as oothwal which became atwal ( also spelt Athwal).Atwals in west Panjab were mostly converted to Islam, but in the rest of Panjab, they remained Hindus or became Sikhs.
