Dec 18, · According to Ali Tayyebi, Senior Partner in Mercer’s Retirement Business, “Falling bond yields have clearly put DB pension plans under a lot of strain in the latter part of this year. Pension plans with higher levels of assets which hedge the effect of falling bond yields will have fared noticeably better during this period.

Mercer has appointed partner Alan Baker as UK head of defined benefit (DB) risk, replacing Ali Tayyebi who will concentrate on client work. Baker (pictured) has been with Mercer since April and started in his new role last week.

Ali Tayyebi, a Senior Partner at Mercer, said: “The welcome trend of improvements in the deficit over recent months continues during July. This was largely driven by a small reduction in market expectations for long-term inflation which reduces the pension liability values.
